Sustainability
As Europe’s leading commercial property investor and developer, Unibail-Rodamco takes a long-term view of its business, social and environmental activities. Our highly integrated approach makes sound business sense and reflects the needs of our different stakeholders: communities, government authorities, visitors, tenants, employees, shareholders and financial partners.
Environmental performance
We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities, for example by:
- promoting energy efficiency, reducing water consumption and managing waste,
- identifying and sharing best practices,
- implementing seasonal action plans and pilot programmes to target specific challenges,
- raising awareness of environmental issues and providing suitable training to UnibailRodamco staff and stakeholders,
- developing “green” building design and construction guidelines and implementing them across our European portfolio,
- performing additional environmental impact analysis alongside our existing environmental due diligence processes.
Social responsibility
The Group works to develop the knowledge and skills of its employees, encourage their aspirations and foster diversity and equal opportunity in the workplace.
Unibail-Rodamco is also committed to strengthening its ability to welcome people with handicaps, whether they are visitors to or tenants of its shopping centres, offices and convention & exhibition venues, or employees of the Group. Most of the Group’s real estate assets are located in urban areas and form an integral part of the local economic, social and environmental fabric. We take this responsibility seriously, actively contributing to the community through initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity and the School of the Second Chance, and supporting the fund-raising initiatives of a wide range of charities. More than 237 charity events were held in Group shopping centres in 2008.
In addition, we organise the annual Grand Prix des Jeunes Créateurs, which provides financial and logistical support to talented young entrepreneurs.
Sound governance
The Group’s governance structure is in line with industry best practices. For environmental and social questions, the Management Board works closely with the International Environmental Performance Committee (IPEC). This in-house working group identifies challenges, sets performance targets, and develops corporate policies and management tools.
